 THE POPCORN HAT

Takes 2 , 2oz. skeins. Two #8 and Two # 4 needles ( 22 inch head size)

Beginning at t he crown, with no. 8 needles cast on 11 sts.

1st row: Inc. 1.st. in each st. to last 2 sts.  K2

2nd and alternate rows: Purl

3rd row ( k1.  Inc.   1.st.   in   next   st. ) 9 times. K2

5th  row (  k2.  Inc.   1.st.   in   next   st.) 9 times. K2

7th  row (  k3.  Inc.   1.st.   in   next   st.) 9 times. K2

9th  row (  k4.  Inc.   1.st.   in   next   st.) 9 times. K2

11th  row (  k5.  Inc.   1.st.   in   next   st.) 9 times. K2

13th  row (  k6.  Inc.   1.st.   in   next   st.) 9 times. K2

15th  row (  k7.  Inc.   1.st.   in   next   st.) 9 times. K2

17th  row (  k8.  Inc.   1.st.   in   next   st.) 9 times. K2

19th  row (  k4.  Inc.   1.st.   in   next   st.) 18 times.

K2 ( 110 sts. on needle). Purl 1 row

Change to #4 needles and proceed:-

1st row: ( Right side of work). K1. Purl to last st. K1

2nd row: ( wrong side of work). K1. *P3tog. Knit into front of next st. as usual but leave it on left hand needle. Bring wool to front of work and purl into front of same st. but still leave it on left hand needle. Take wool to back of work and knit into front of same st. again. Slip st. off left hand needle. ( This increases 2 sts. in 1.st. to make up for the 2 sts. in the 1. st. to make up for the 2 sts. decreased by the *P3tog.  The working of a st. in this manner will be termed (K1. P1.K1) all into front of next st. throughout. Repeat from * to last K1 

3rd row: K1. Purl to last st. K1.

4th row: K1. *(K1. P1. K1) all in front of next st. P3tog.  repeat from * to last st. K1 repeat these 4 rows of Popcorn pattern once more, then 1st row once.

10th row: K1. *P3tog.  P1. repeat from * to last st. K1. ( 56 sts. on needle). Knit 1 row

12th row: (eyelets) P2. * w.r.n. P2tog. P1. repeat from * to end of row. Knit 1 row.

14th row: P1. *inc. 1.st. purlways in each of the next sts. (K1.  P1. K1.) all into front of next at. Repeat from * to last 11 sts. Inc. 1.st. in each of the next 10 sts. P1 ( 114 sts. on needle)

Work 5 complete patterns. Purl 1 row.

Change to # * needles and proceed:-

1st row: K1. *P3tog.  P1. Repeat from * to last st. K1. Knit one row. Purl 1 row.

4th row: K1. inc. 1.st. in each st. to last st. Purl 1 row. Knit 1 row. Purl 1 row  CAST OFF LOOSELY

Sew side edges of work  together from back seam. Gather up top into a neat circle. Turn the last 6 rows of Stocking st. under and hem in position. 

For the tie: Using a contrasting color if desired, with #4 needles cast on 150 sts. LOOSELY. Thread through eyelets and tie in a bow. ( reinforce crown with a circle of wire if desired.

    

THE LOOPED HAT

Takes 2 , 2oz. skeins. Two #8 needles ( 22 inch head size)

Beginning at t he crown, with no. 8 needles cast on 11 sts. and work as given for Popcorn Hat to end of 17 th row. (92 sts. on needle).

Proceed:-

1st row: (wrong side of work) . K1. Insert point of right hand needle into next st.  Place forefinger of left hand under point of right hand needle and wind loosely AWAY from you, over top, twice around needle and finger and once around needle only. Draw these three loops on the right hand needle through st. on left hand needle, dropping this st. from left hand needle in usual way. Remove finger. Pass 3 loops from right hand needle to left hand needle and knit them tog. to make 1.st.  Tighten loops at back of work. Be sure to wind loosely enough so that finished loops will be at least 1 inch in length.* Repeat from * to * to end of row.

2nd row: (right side of work). Purl. Repeat these 2 rows 3 times more, then 1 st. row once.

10th row: K4. *inc. 1.st. in next st. K10. Repeat from * to end of row (100 sts. on needle). Work 6 ins. even in (K2. P2) ribbing. Cast off LOOSELY in ribbing. Sew side edges of work together for back seam. Gather up top into a neat circle.

 

  HAT WITH LOOPED FACE BORDER

Takes 3 , 1 oz. balls of yarn. Two #7 and Two # 4 needles ( 22 inch head size)

Loop Pattern: 1st. row: (wrong side of work). * K1. Insert point of right hand needle into next st. Place 1st. and 2nd fingers of left hand under point of right hand needle and wind yarn LOOSELY AWAY from you, over top, once around needle and fingers and once around needle only. Draw these two loops on right hand needle through st. on left hand needle, dropping st. from left hand needle in usual way. Remove fingers. This makes one loop st.* Repeat from * to * to end of row.

2nd row: (right side of work). Knit, always working as 1.st. the 2 loops on needle of loop st. of previous row. Tighten loops as you go.

3rd row: * Make loop st. K1. Repeat from * to end of row.

4th row: As 2nd. row. These 4 rows complete one pattern.

HAT WITH LOOPED FACE BORDER

Beginning at face edge, with ribbing color and # 7 needles cast on 64 sts. and work 9 rows (K2. P2) ribbing.

Change to #4 needles and using Loop color, work 3 complete loop patterns, then 1st. row of next pattern.            ( 7 loop rows in all).

Change to #7 needles and with ribbing color, work 4 ins. (K2. P2) ribbing on these 64 sts. With right side of work facing , 

Proceed:-

1st row:  *K2tog. P2tog. Repeat from * to end of row. Work 5 rows (K1 P1) ribbing. 

7th row:  K1. (K2tog.) 15 times. K1 Purl 1 row.

9th row: K1. (K2tog.) 8 times. Break yarn. Thread end through remaining sts. Draw up and fasten securely. Sew sides edges together for back seam. Wear point high as shown in top picture or pressed against back of head for effect shown on other picture.

  HAT WITH LOOPED TOP

Takes 3 , 1 oz. balls of yarn. Two #7 and Two # 4 needles ( 22 inch head size)

Beginning at face edge , with ribbing color and #7 needles cast on 72 sts. and work 8 ins. (K2. P2) ribbing.

Next row: *K2. P2tog. K2tog. P2tog. Repeat from * to last 8 sts. K2. P2tog. K2tog. P2. (46 sts. on needle)

Change to # 4 needles and using Loop color, work 2 complete Loop Patterns, then 1st. 2nd and 3rd rows of next pattern. (6 loop rows in all)

Change to # 7 needles. 

Next row: K1. ( K2tog.) 22 times. K1. ( 24 sts. on needle)

Work 1st. 2nd and 3rd pattern rows

Next row: K1. (K2tog.) 11 times  K1. (13 sts. on needle).

Next row: Make loop st. in each st. across row.

Next row: K1. ( k2tog.) 6 times. Break yarn. Thread end through remaining sts. Draw up and fasten securely. Sew sides together for back seam. 

Wear to full height as shown in picture or with lower edge tucked under or over as shown in other picture.
